The Maasai Mara was named in honour of the Maasai people, many of whom still reside there. The word “Mara” in their Maasai (Maa) language means “spotted.” While flying overhead in a small plane as you arrive, or when gazing out across the spectacular landscape from on land, you can see how the abundant grassland is dotted with widely spaced thorn trees. These ‘desert date’ trees and baobab trees are food for the great herbivores at the reserve, and sought-after picnic places for safari adventurers.
The Maasai Mara is one of the best places on earth to see most of the ‘Big Five': lions, elephants, leopards, Cape buffalo, and more rarely rhinos. This area is also home to an amazing array of other animals and spectacular creatures you may never have heard of.
Plus, there are over 500 species of birds that live in the area from the world’s largest to those barely seen by the naked eye. Ranging from birds of prey and scavengers to river birds, and endemic and near-endemic bird species common in Kenya, you’ll find them across the terrain throughout the year.
The Maasai People are proud to show you how they live in their traditional ways, greeting you with exuberant welcoming songs and dances. A warrior takes you on a personally guided tour through their village to see typical everyday activities with an opportunity to explore the inside of their homes and purchase some of their handcrafted souvenirs.
With generations of knowledge of their lands and its wildlife, the Maasai People continue to be custodians of the Maasai Mara-Serengeti eco-systems. They share knowledge of their environment in which they co-exist and are often hired as safari game drivers and guides in their communities. Today they have formed a partnership with the African wilderness, tourism and conservation to ensure sustainability of their habitats.
