A wooden club known as a Rungu made of hardwood was traditionally used as a weapon in both warfare and hunting by Maasai male warriors, the morans. Each one is handcrafted by a warrior, shaped with a machete and then polished using textured leaves as natural sandpaper. A strong, short wooden club with a heavy rounded knob or head on one end, in Maasai culture, the Rungu is a key emblem of warrior status for young males. It is also used ceremonially as a talking stick, with a special one held by the designated speaker at important tribal gatherings.
